To cross-reference an automatic slack adjuster by OE number, treat the number as a lookup key and nothing more — the fit is decided by five physical specs: spline count and spline diameter, arm length measured from spline centre to clevis pin centre, arm geometry (straight or offset, and which side it is handed for), the control arm and anchor bracket arrangement, and the clevis pin and pushrod thread. A replacement that matches all five will work on that axle even if the part numbers look nothing alike. A number-only match that gets the spline or the arm length wrong will bolt up and still brake badly.
That matters because air brakes are pneumatic, not hydraulic. The slack adjuster is the lever that converts brake chamber pushrod travel into S-cam rotation, so arm length is part of the brake's mechanical advantage. Change it and you change how much torque that wheel end makes for a given air pressure.
What the number stamped on the housing actually is
There are usually three numbering systems in play for one slack adjuster, and technicians get burned when they assume they are all the same thing:
- Truck or trailer OEM number — issued by Freightliner, Volvo, Mack, PACCAR, International, Scania, MAN and so on. This is what a dealer parts counter looks up from the VIN.
- Axle manufacturer number — Meritor, Dana, SAF-Holland, BPW and similar. Found on the axle tag, and often the most reliable route when the VIN build sheet is vague.
- Brake supplier number — Bendix, Haldex, Knorr-Bremse, Wabco/ZF, Meritor. This is normally what is cast or stamped into the slack adjuster body itself.
Cross-referencing means walking that chain: OEM number to axle number to supplier number, then confirming the supplier number against the physical specification. Supersessions are common — a supplier may have replaced an older casting with a revised unit that has a different control arm or grease routing, so an obsolete number rarely means "no replacement available."
The five specifications that must match

Spline count and diameter
Ten-spline camshafts are by far the most common on North American S-cam axles; 24-, 28- and 37-spline camshafts turn up on European axles and on many trailer applications. Do not guess from the catalogue photo. Count the teeth on the camshaft itself and measure the spline outside diameter, because two units with the same tooth count can still differ in diameter and will not slide on.
Arm length
Measure centre of spline to centre of clevis pin hole. North American units are usually listed in inches — 5, 5.5 and 6 inch arms cover most of the fleet — while European units are listed in millimetres, typically somewhere between roughly 100 and 165 mm. Some slack adjusters have two or three pin holes, which lets one casting cover several arm lengths; if you fit one of those, use the same hole the old unit used, not whichever hole lines up easiest.
Offset and handing
Offset (sometimes called a dogleg or cranked body) exists to clear the chamber bracket, axle seat or air spring. Many automatic slack adjusters are also handed, because the control arm has to react in the correct direction for the cam rotation on that side of the vehicle. A left-hand unit fitted on the right will either foul something or fail to adjust properly.
Control arm and anchor bracket
The control arm and its anchor point are what make the unit automatic. If the cross-reference gives you the right splines and arm length but a different anchor bracket, the adjuster will still clamp the brake — it just will not maintain adjustment correctly, and you will be chasing long stroke again in a few thousand miles.
Clevis, pin and pushrod thread
Many replacements ship as a kit with clevis, pin, cotter pins and control arm hardware. Check that the clevis thread matches your brake chamber pushrod before you cut anything, and always fit new pins rather than reusing worn ones. If the pushrod is bent, corroded or the clevis is elongated, replace it while the wheel end is apart.
A cross-reference procedure that holds up
- Record the VIN, axle tag data and the numbers cast or stamped on the existing slack adjuster. Photograph the installed unit from the side and from above before removal.
- Measure the physical specs on the vehicle: spline count, spline diameter, arm length, offset, control arm length and anchor point.
- Look the OE number up against the axle manufacturer and brake supplier listings, and note any supersession.
- Compare the candidate part's published specification line against your measurements. If the listing does not state spline count and arm length, do not order from it.
- Check handing and order in axle pairs. Replacing one side only leaves you with mismatched wear and uneven adjustment across the axle.
- Confirm the kit contents — some numbers are the bare adjuster, others include clevis and installation hardware.
Never mix an automatic and a manual slack adjuster on the same axle, and never fix a chronic out-of-adjustment complaint by cranking on an automatic unit. If an automatic adjuster is running long stroke, the fault is usually a seized cam, a worn clevis or pushrod, or a failed adjuster — not something you correct with a wrench.
Where cross-references go wrong
- Number matched, spline not counted. The single most common error, usually on mixed fleets where axles were swapped in service.
- Arm length assumed from the other side of the vehicle. Check both — a previous repair may already have introduced a mismatch.
- Trailer axles treated like tractor axles. Trailer applications often use different spline and arm combinations from the tractor drive axle on the same unit.
- Superseded numbers written off as unavailable. Follow the supersession chain before declaring a part obsolete.
- Ignoring the installed angle. Fit is not the same as function; the arm has to sit at the angle the manufacturer specifies relative to the pushrod at rest.

Verify the swap on the vehicle
Chock the wheels and cage the spring brake before you disturb the clevis — spring brakes begin to apply as system pressure falls to roughly 20-45 psi, so a leaking-down system can trap you. Fit the new unit, set the installed angle per the manufacturer's instructions, then build the system back to a full charge of about 120 psi and let the governor cut out normally in the 120-135 psi band.
With the system between roughly 90 and 100 psi, make a full brake application and measure pushrod travel at each wheel end, then compare it against the limits for that chamber size.
