For a Class 8 truck, relining one axle typically runs about $400 to $900 in parts and labor, a reline with new drums on that same axle lands closer to $700 to $1,500, and a full three-axle tractor brake job with drums commonly totals $2,000 to $4,000. Air compressor replacement is usually $900 to $2,500 installed. These are shop-rate ballparks rather than quotes — the same job swings by hundreds of dollars depending on labor rate, parts grade, and how much seized hardware the technician has to fight.
The reason heavy-truck brake repair costs what it does is that air brakes are pneumatic, not hydraulic. You are paying for foundation brake wear parts and for an air supply and control system — compressor, dryer, governor, valves, chambers — that a light vehicle simply does not have.

Trailer work generally sits at the lower end of these ranges because access is better and there is no engine or frame rail in the way. Mobile service, roadside calls, and after-hours work add a call-out fee and a premium labor rate on top.
What you are actually paying for
On most brake invoices, labor is the larger half. Heavy-truck shop rates commonly run $100 to $180 per hour depending on region and whether you are at a dealer, an independent, or a fleet shop. A reline is not a difficult job, but it is a physical one: wheels off, drums off, S-cam and anchor pins inspected, springs and rollers replaced, then adjustment and a leak check.
Hours inflate for predictable reasons. Rusted drum-to-hub interfaces, corroded S-cam bushings, wheel studs that shear, and seized clevis pins all turn a two-hour axle into a four-hour axle. If a wheel end has been dragging and cooked itself, the shop may find heat-checked drums, glazed linings, and a chamber diaphragm that has taken heat — three line items instead of one.
Foundation brake work: shoes, drums, and hardware
A reline is the baseline job. Exchange shoes with new linings, a hardware kit with return springs, anchor pins, rollers and bushings, and new drums if the old ones are near the discard diameter or heat-checked. Skipping the hardware kit to save money is a false economy — worn rollers and tired springs are a common cause of uneven wear and slow release on the next set. Air disc brakes change the math. Pads are quicker to swap than shoes, so labor drops, but rotors and calipers cost more than drums, and a seized caliper can push a single wheel end past $1,000.
Wheel-end air components
Chambers and slack adjusters are cheap parts with modest labor, and they are usually replaced in pairs across an axle so both sides behave the same. A leaking chamber diaphragm or an automatic slack adjuster that has stopped taking up slack shows up as long pushrod stroke at inspection. Because spring brakes begin to apply as air in the hold-off chamber falls to roughly 20 to 45 psi, a chamber that leaks internally can also produce a parking brake that drags — expensive if it is ignored long enough to destroy linings and a drum.
Air supply repairs: compressor, dryer, governor
This is where costs jump, because diagnosis matters more than parts. A truck that will not reach the governor cut-out point — commonly 120 to 135 psi, with cut-in around 100 to 110 psi — is not automatically a bad compressor. A restricted discharge line, a failed governor, a stuck unloader, or a dryer purging continuously will produce the same complaint at a fraction of the price. Parts grade matters here more than anywhere else on the truck. OE-grade compressors, unloader kits, dryers and valves cross-referenced to Bendix, Wabco/ZF, Knorr-Bremse, Meritor, Haldex or the engine maker's part number are worth the premium, because a second failure means paying the same labor twice. Downtime is the cost that never appears on the invoice
A truck sitting in a bay is not earning. Depending on lane and contract, an out-of-service day commonly costs $500 to $1,000 in lost revenue, plus a rescue tractor if the load has to move. That figure is why a $250 chamber replaced at PM is cheaper than the same chamber replaced at a roadside call after the low-air warning — which activates at approximately 60 psi — sounded on a Sunday.
A brake job scheduled costs parts and hours. The same brake job unscheduled costs parts, premium hours, a tow, and a day of revenue.
How to keep the number down
- Measure pushrod stroke at every PM. Adjustment problems caught early are free; caught late they are a reline.
- Drain the tanks and service the dryer cartridge on schedule. Wet, oily air kills valves and chambers system-wide, and that is a four-figure repair.
- Do axles as a set, not one wheel at a time. Half the labor is already paid for once the wheels are off.
- Fix leaks when they are small. A system that bleeds down overnight makes the compressor cycle constantly and shortens its life.
- Get a written estimate that separates parts, labor hours, and shop supplies, and ask what the shop found rather than what it plans to sell.
