
Most air brake foundation hardware runs on an NLGI #1 or #2 extreme-pressure (EP) lithium-complex chassis grease, applied at every scheduled PM until fresh grease purges past the seals. The points that matter are the slack adjusters, the S-cam bushings at both ends of each camshaft, the clevis and anchor pins, and the cam rollers. Everything on the pneumatic side — tanks, valves, lines and chambers — stays dry. Grease belongs on the mechanical foundation brake only, and the axle or slack adjuster manufacturer's approved lubricant list always outranks a general recommendation.
Why lubrication is a safety item, not housekeeping
An S-cam has to rotate in its bushings every time the pedal is applied and spring back the instant it is released. When those bushings dry out, corrode or pack with road salt and water, the cam turns hard and returns slowly. That shows up as brakes that stay on after release, one wheel end running hotter than the others, and pull under braking. Left alone it becomes dragging brakes, cooked linings and a wheel end out of adjustment, which is a roadside out-of-service item rather than a shop inconvenience.
Automatic slack adjusters are affected too. They are mechanical devices with an internal clutch and worm gear, and they take up adjustment during the release stroke. A stiff cam, or an adjuster full of hardened water-cut grease, will not index properly, so stroke creeps out even though the adjuster is "automatic". On a standard S-cam foundation brake, lubrication and adjustment are the same job done in the right order: lube first, then verify stroke.
Choosing the right air brake grease
There is no single universal product, but the specification most foundation brake makers land on looks like the table below. Cross-check it against the service literature for your specific axle and slack adjuster, because some manufacturers publish their own approved lubricant list and restrict certain additives.

Grease compatibility
Mixing incompatible thickeners — lithium complex with polyurea, for example — can cause the blend to soften and run out, or to harden into a plug that blocks the passage. When switching products across a fleet, purge each fitting until only new grease comes out, and standardise so the same gun does not float between chemistries.
Where the grease fittings are
Fitting count varies by axle and by brake design, but this is the layout on a typical drum-braked axle.

Correct greasing technique
- Chock the wheels and secure the vehicle. Charge the system to full pressure, roughly 120 psi at governor cut-out on most trucks, so the spring brakes release and the cam sits at rest against its return spring.
- Wipe every fitting clean before the coupler touches it. Pushing grit into a bushing does more damage than a missed service.
- Replace missing, broken or seized fittings before you start. A wheel end that has been running with a broken zerk usually needs inspection, not just grease.
- Pump slowly and watch for purge. Fresh grease appearing at the seal is the signal to stop — not a stroke count.
- If nothing purges, stop. Either the fitting is plugged or the bushing is seized and packed. That wheel end comes apart; forcing more pressure only blows the seal out.
- Wipe the excess off immediately. Grease left on the spider, backing plate or drum edge finds its way onto the linings.
- Check free stroke and applied stroke afterwards, correct the adjustment, and confirm pushrod travel is inside the limit for that chamber size.
What comes out of a bushing tells you what has been happening inside it. Grey milky purge means water intrusion, gritty black purge means the bushing is wearing, and no purge at all means that cam is on borrowed time.
The same sequence applies whether you are working to a shop PM schedule or greasing slack adjusters and cams as part of a wheel-end inspection.
How often to lubricate
Follow the manufacturer's interval first. As a practical fleet baseline, foundation brake lube belongs on every A- or B-level PM, and the interval tightens sharply with duty cycle.

Common mistakes
- Greasing only the slack adjuster. The cam bushings are where seizure actually starts, and the inboard bracket fitting is the one most often skipped.
- Over-greasing. Continuing to pump after purge forces lubricant past the seals and out onto linings and drums.
- Winter-grade mismatch. A heavy grease in extreme cold pumps badly and can leave an automatic slack adjuster slow to index.
- Greasing but not re-checking stroke. Lubrication frees the mechanism; verify stroke afterwards or only half the job is done.
- Chasing a noise with the grease gun. Knocking, hissing or a squeal on release usually points to a worn bushing, a tired return spring or an air leak, not a dry fitting.
What should never see grease
- Brake linings, drum friction surfaces and the inside of the drum.
- ABS wheel speed sensors and their retaining clips — use only the sensor lubricant specified by the manufacturer, never chassis grease.
- Air line threads and fittings — use the approved sealant, applied sparingly, so nothing can migrate into a valve.
- Anything inside the pneumatic circuit. Air dryers, valves, chambers and reservoirs are designed to run on clean dry air. Oil found in the tanks or downstream of the dryer is a compressor fault to diagnose, not a sign that something needs lubricating.
Kept to a schedule, foundation brake lubrication is one of the cheapest ways to hold stroke in spec, keep drums cool and stay out of trouble at a roadside inspection.
