A leveling valve repair kit is a seal and wear-part set — the control shaft seal, body and cover O-rings, the internal spool or poppet elements with their seats and springs, retaining clips and washers, and on some kits the linkage rod ends — that returns a mechanically sound height control valve to specification without replacing the body. It is the right call when the housing and shaft bore are still true and the fault is internal leakage, a lazy exhaust, or a lost time delay. It is the wrong call when the control shaft rocks in its bore, the housing is corroded or cracked, or the air system is contaminated with compressor oil, because a kit cannot fix any of those.
Height control valves sit on the suspension circuit rather than a brake circuit, but they draw from the same compressed air supply, which is why suspension work is still air system work. The suspension feed is taken through a pressure protection valve that closes the accessory circuit before system pressure can fall toward the low-air warning point at around 60 psi. Supply at the valve therefore tracks the rest of the system: fully charged at roughly 120 psi, with the governor cutting out somewhere in the 120 to 135 psi band and cutting back in around 100 to 110 psi. A leaking leveling valve will not normally put the brakes at risk, but it keeps the compressor loaded and the dryer purging, and that is where the real cost of ignoring it sits.
What is actually in the kit
Content varies by valve family — a plain mechanical valve, a delay-type valve and a valve with an integral dump function are not the same rebuild — but the pattern is consistent.

What is not in the kit: the housing, the port threads, the mounting bracket, and in most cases the control shaft. Those are the parts that decide whether the rebuild is worth starting.
Before you order: prove the valve is the fault
Height control problems get blamed on the valve far more often than the valve deserves. Work through the cheap causes first: worn rod ends or a bent control arm, a split air spring, a chafed line or weeping fitting, a ride height that was set by eye at some point in the vehicle's history, and on electronically controlled suspension a solenoid or sensor fault rather than a mechanical valve at all. Then leak test properly. Charge the system, leave the control arm at neutral, and soap the exhaust port, the shaft where it exits the housing, and the housing joint. Where the bubbles appear tells you which part of the kit you need — and whether a kit is enough.

Reading the body: rebuild or replace
Worth rebuilding when the housing casting is sound with no cracks and no corrosion pitting on the sealing faces; the port threads are clean and square; the control shaft has no felt play when you rock it with the linkage disconnected; the bore is smooth and round; the interior is dry, with no oil film, sludge or rust scale; and the valve is a current OE design with a kit available at a sensible fraction of a new unit.
Finished when you can feel the shaft move sideways in its bore — that single check ends more rebuilds than everything else combined, because a new seal cannot seal an out-of-round bore. Also finished: aluminum housings blooming with white oxide at the sealing faces, cracked plastic bodies or pulled port threads, interiors coated in compressor oil or emulsified sludge, internal rust or frost damage, and any valve whose neutral position no longer repeats after the arm is moved and released.
Bench time against a new valve
Be honest about the arithmetic. Removal and refit take the same time either way, and that is most of the labor; the rebuild itself adds perhaps half an hour on the bench plus a functional test. So a kit wins where parts cost or availability dominates: expensive OEM-specific valves, cab suspension valves, long-lead items, and fleets standardised on one valve that can rebuild cores between jobs and fit a tested unit off the shelf. A new valve wins on cheap common units, roadside work, customer-pay jobs where you want to touch it once, and any system that is oil-contaminated — there, decontaminate first or you will be back.
If you go the replacement route, order against the OE number rather than the photograph. Doing the job
Never work under a vehicle supported by its air springs. Chock the wheels, apply the parking brakes, and support the chassis mechanically before you disconnect anything.
- Record the ride height measurement and mark the control arm position before anything is disturbed.
- Exhaust the suspension reservoir; the circuit holds pressure after the engine is shut down.
- Cap the lines, remove the valve, and clean the outside thoroughly before opening it — most rebuild failures start with dirt introduced during disassembly.
- Strip it, then inspect the bore and shaft. This is the go or no-go point; stop here if there is play or scoring.
- Fit every elastomer in the kit, not just the one that was leaking, using the supplied lubricant and the torque figures on the instruction sheet.
- Bench test on regulated shop air: no flow at neutral, fill with the arm raised, exhaust with the arm lowered, and the delay behaving as designed.
- Refit, set the linkage to the OEM frame-to-axle figure at operating pressure on level ground, and check both sides of the axle.
- Leak check at neutral, then recheck after a load cycle and again after a short road test.
Ride height is not a detail. Setting it wrong changes load distribution across the axle, alters brake balance and drives uneven tire wear, and it will have you back under the vehicle blaming the new parts.
